Paramount will release a 4K Blu-ray edition of the wolf of Wall Street on December 14, 2021. To our knowledge, this is the only way to watch the movie in 4K (although a digital upgrade often occurs at the same time as a physical upgrade), and this edition has a disc with digital copy includes Dolby Vision and HDR10 high dynamic range. There is also a Limited Edition SteelBook version (see packaging photo below) with the same specs and bonuses as the standard âplasticâ edition.
With a total of five Oscar nominations, the wolf of Wall Street certainly received the honors due to him. Martin Scorsese was nominated for Best Director and the film was nominated for Best Picture.
Leonardo DiCaprio, who stars as Jordan Belfort, has been nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. Jonah Hill, portrayed as Belfort’s business partner Donnie Azoff, was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role.
It was also a landmark role for Margot Robbie, who to many is best known for her performances as Harley Quinn in the films Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey.
âThese are beginner numbers in this racket! “
the wolf of Wall Street is based on Jordan Belfort’s memoir of the company he founded, Stratton Oakmont, and its eventual downfall. For his part, Belfort served a prison sentence for securities fraud and money laundering, but not before handing over some of the key players in the company to the FBI. The film is an indulgent and debauchery portrayal of greed in the stock exchange industry.
Martin Scorsese has reportedly approved a new film transfer for this 4k disc presentation. The 4k video image is mostly played at bit rates between 40 and 60 Mbps. Sometimes the flow fell in the teens and other times jumped in the eighties and nineties. There are varying proportions in the movie, primarily 2.39: 1, but sometimes in a more square 1.85: 1 aspect ratio.
The Dolby Vision / HDR10 component of the wolf of Wall Street definitely added something to the video quality. In previous HD renderings, you certainly don’t get such a wide range of contrast or depth in the shadow areas. Take for example the image of Belfort standing with his first wife Leah outside Trump Tower. There is a dominant golden color which can be difficult to reproduce on the screen and the shadows behind glass which easily get stuck in HD quality. HDR can fill these shadows with more color value due to the bit depth gain. In addition, with 4x resolution of 1080 Ã 1920 (HD), 2160 Ã 3840 (UHD) opens the image for more detail.
The other place you see the benefit of HDR is in high office buildings where the sky can blow when viewed on lower screens and from lower mounts. You can see more details in the skylines and in the trading rooms. And how about the infamous scene where Belfort’s second wife Naomi teases him in their daughter’s bedroom? The magenta dress she wears is gaining traction with HDR as well as their daughter’s toys strewn across the floor (previous renderings seem less saturated and a bit flatter).
Audio is offered in DTS-HD Master Audio in 5.1ch, with SDH English and French subtitles.
There are some great surround sound effects in this movie, especially in the trading floor where there is just an insane amount of fuss. Likewise, an almost intimate audio moment occurs in the penny stock office Jordan Belfont visits at 19 while looking for a job. You can hear things right behind you and to the left and right as if you were sitting in the chair next to him. Later, in the scene at 2:46 where Belfort is carrying a thread as he talks to Danny Porush, there is a very distinctive surround effect where those outside the glass-walled office can be heard. through several channels.
The soundtrack at the wolf of Wall Street includes both original music as well as existing tracks that have been licensed for the film. In total, over 60 songs were used, including hits like Movin ‘Out (Anthony’s Song) by Billy Joel and âMrs. Robinson “performed by The Lemonheads.
There’s a great audio mix in this movie, especially considering all the dialogue going on throughout. It’s definitely a movie worth listening to at a higher volume to hear all the details. A good pair of headphones (if you need to turn down the volume) also provides a good spatial experience.
Bonus material previously released on the 4K Blu-ray disc includes featurettes The Wolfpack, Running Wild, and The Wolf of Wall Street roundtable, all of which give a great insight into the inspiration and making of the film.
