Will closed cinemas in Redlands, Glendale, Downey and Monrovia reopen? – Daily news
As coronavirus restrictions began to ease this spring, customers at Studio Movie Grill locations in Redlands, Glendale, Downey and Monrovia have likely wondered when their local theaters will reopen.
The national chain emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April, and although its website reports that cinemas in Bakersfield, Pa. Are open, all four Southern California locations have disappeared from the company’s online list.
In May, Studio Movie Grill spokesperson Lynne McQuaker provided only the following written statement: “All SMG theaters remain under review. Where possible, SMG intends to reopen closed theaters and will publicly share updates as they become available. “
On a recent weekday afternoon at the Redlands Theater, a synthetic turf wall was empty where patrons had previously paid their respects to a beloved host who died of COVID-19 in September 2020. Signs stuck to the door state “No money” inside. The marquee in the street always urges the public to “practice a safe distance”.
A couple looked through the closed doors into the dark lobby for a moment before walking hand-in-hand to a Mexican restaurant next door.
While SMG is hiding details, there appears to be some movement in closed theaters.
Look Dine-in Cinemas, a Dallas-based movie operator, lists the Redlands Theater at 340 N. Eureka St. as “Coming Soon.” Job postings are also posted for the other three SMG properties: 128 Artsakh Ave., Glendale; 8200 Third St., Downey; and 410 S. Myrtle Ave., Monrovia.
Look representatives did not respond to a message requesting more information on their plans for the four theaters, although a June 3 social media post announced that the company “is currently SEARCHING for talent in our 4 theaters. next locations in California! “
Redlands spokesman Carl Baker said Look applied for a business license in the city on Tuesday, June 15 and the documents were still being processed. The city, he said, had no more information on the company’s plans.
SMG took over the Redlands, Monrovia, and Downey locations of the Krikorian Premiere Theaters in 2017, and began removing snack bars and adding in-theater dining rooms that brought food directly to moviegoers in their reclining seats.
In Redlands, a converted multiplex was inaugurated in February 2019.
The Glendale location, formerly the MGN Five Star Cinema, also offered meals. It opened as an SMG site in October 2019.
The former Krikorian Monrovia Cinema 12 & LFX cinema opened under SMG in September 2017 before being converted into a dining room.
At this point, SMG operated 27 theaters. It now has 19 theaters open, including its other Southern California location in Simi Valley.
Look has only one other location listed on its website – a theater in Dallas, Texas – and it is currently open for business. Besides popcorn, the menu includes cocktails, wine and beer, sushi, Jalapeno Honey BLT chicken sandwich and more.
According to its website, Look offers a “cutting-edge immersive presentation experience, a premium menu and exceptional service.”
