The programming of the Japan Society / ACA movie series with Naomi Kawase, more – Deadline
EXCLUSIVE: ACA Cinema Project’s second series, “Flash Forward: Debut Works and Recent Films by Notable Japanese Directors,” has set its lineup for a hybrid program that will run from December 3 to 23. Presented by the New York-based nonprofit Japan Society and the Japanese Government Agency for Cultural Affairs, in collaboration with the Visual Industry Promotion Organization, the event will feature 18 films shown in North America on the Virtual Cinema hub. by the Japan Society, as well as two in-person screenings on December 11 and 17.
Showcasing the early efforts of now established contemporary filmmakers, the program takes a look at six well-known Japanese directors: Naomi Kawase, Miwa Nishikawa, Shuichi Okita, Junji Sakamoto, Akihiko Shiota and Masayuki Suo. Associating each of their beginnings with a recent work, the series presents two facets of their career. (Scroll down for the full list.) Panel discussions will also be held with some of the filmmakers and will be available to stream worldwide.
Highlights of the series include the debut of Kawase, a festival regular in 1997 Suzaku, a family drama that won Cannes’ Camera d’Or, making the director the youngest to win the award. In collaboration with the National Film Archives of Japan, the Japan Society will additionally present new 4K restorations by Sadao Yamanaka Tange Sazen and the pot is worth a million ryo in its North American premiere, and Dark Priest, an international first. These will be screened at the Japan Society auditorium in the city center. A contemporary of Ozu and Naruse, Yamanaka passed away at the age of 28, leaving behind a modest but acclaimed body of work that inspired filmmakers like Akira Kurosawa, Seijun Suzuki and Kazuo Kuroki.
Japan Society recently hosted the 15th edition of Japan Cuts: Festival Of New Japanese Film, the largest celebration of Japanese cinema in North America.
