CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Connor Palace in Playhouse Square opened as a vaudeville and movie theater in 1922, but has been home to Broadway-style entertainment since 1988. But for three weeks in August, the ornate theater will be transformed into a palace of cinema once again for the return of the classic film series known as Cinema at the Square.

From August 4 to 21, moviegoers can enjoy 15 films presented in their original 35mm projection format on a 20′ x 47′ widescreen. Selections range from classics like “The Godfather,” “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” and “The Sound of Music” to fan-favorite blockbusters like “Batman,” “Independence Day” and “Men and Black.” There’s something for everyone, including kids (“Beauty and the Beast,” “The Goonies”), adults (“The Bodyguard,” “Paris Blues”) and families (“The Princess Bride” , “Stand By Me”).

Forget easy trivia and endless advertisements, each screening will be preceded by a performance by members of the Western Reserve Theater Organ Society on the theater’s fully restored 1928 Kimball organ. Classic movie concessions will also be available for purchase.

Presented by Medical Mutual, Cinema at the Square last took place in 2019. Tickets for each screening are $5 and are on sale now at playhousesquare.org or by calling 216-241-6000.

The full program is below. The Connor Palace is located at 1615 Euclid Ave. in Cleveland.

The Palace was one of downtown Cleveland’s premier movie theaters for many years. This is what it looked like in 1956.
