The MCU’s First X-Men Movie Might Not Happen Until Phase 7
Contrary to some late-breaking reports last week, Marvel didn’t announce the MCU’s first X-Men movie at Comic-Con. Mutants, if that is the name, is not part of the list of phases 5 and 6 that Kevin Feige revealed to the SDCC last week. And if a new rumor is accurate, Marvel won’t release any X-Men movies until the MCU reaches Phase 7. It’ll be 2026 or later if that claim comes to fruition.
It’s not that Marvel doesn’t want to add mutants to the MCU, because we’ve seen them appear before. And Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) is set to appear in the MCU before Phase 6 ends. But Fox’s existing contractual obligations could force Marvel to use the same actors for all movies released through 2025. Some spoilers may follow below.
MCU Phase 5 & 6 Announcements
We had no idea how big Marvel’s Comic-Con 2022 announcements were. Kevin Feige told the world that Phase 4 ends this year with wakanda forever and remaining Disney Plus content.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania will then open phase 5, which will last until early July 2024 when Love at first sight hit theaters. On the face of it, there’s no room for X-Men movies in the MCU’s Phase 5, as Marvel seems to have announced every title in it. We’re not counting any anime series here, which could feature all kinds of mutants from different realities.
But Marvel started showing us the MCU’s mutants with Ms. Marvel. Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan is a mutant, though the X-Men label is still missing. Also, we saw Patrick Stewart’s Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It’s a different reality, and Stewart may never return to the role. But it still matters.
With that in mind, we expect more mutants to appear in Phases 5 and 6. As for Phase 6, Marvel only gave us three of the 11 titles it contains. This is The Fantastic Four, Avengers: Kang Dynastyand Avengers: Secret Wars. There’s plenty of room in Phase 6 for Marvel to add a live-action X-Men title, whatever it calls it.
And we’re still waiting for a Dead Pool 3 release before avengers 5 hits theaters.
Why The X-Men Movies Might Only Drop In The MCU’s Phase 7
Secret Wars will end Phase 6 in November 2025, and that’s how far Marvel’s MCU announcements went at Comic-Con. This brings us to a marvel vision podcast episode, where we find out that Marvel might have exceptional obligations to some of the X-Men actors who appeared in the Fox films.
These contracts last until 2025, so Marvel can’t recast any of the roles it might want to adapt for the MCU. And Marvel probably wants most of the X-Men from the Fox movies to populate the MCU as well.
As with all MCU rumors, there’s no way to verify any of this. Even if the information is accurate, Marvel keeps showing us mutants in the MCU now that it’s officially kicked off the process. Without forgetting that phases 4 to 6 are part of the Multiverse Saga. That is, we might see some of the Fox mutants again, in addition to Deadpool.
Even without the X-Men in the MCU officially, Marvel will release a massive amount of movies and TV shows in the years to come. Not having an X-Men movie in Phases 5 and 6 isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Let’s not forget that Marvel has yet to find a way to explain their existence.
