Bona’s “Lake Changjin II” grossed $43.5 million over the Friday-Sunday weekend, ahead of comedy “Too Cool to Kill” with $37.3 million over the same three days. The weekend’s third-place finisher was drama “Nice View” with $21.6 million and animation “Boonie Bears: Back to Earth” with $14.0 million. The “Snipers” led by Zhang Yimou and Zhang Mo finished fifth over the weekend with $11 million.
Imax reported that “Lake Changjin II” earned $2.65 million from 730 locations in China over the weekend. This pushed its Imax tally to $30.5 million. The film’s cumulative total stands at $524 million after just 13 days of release.
“Too Cool to Kill” has amassed $319 million, while “Nice View” has grossed $161 million. “Boonie Bears: Back to Earth” has hit $127 million, surely guaranteeing there will be another installment in time for Lunar New Year 2023. “Snipers,” which is now receiving encouragement from state media, features of $69.1 million. All of the top titles were released on the same day, February 1, 2022.
The analysis showed that the total box office during Lunar New Year was $950 million, lower than in 2021, when the total hit $1.2 billion. But it was still higher than before the 2019 pandemic, when the figure was $881 million. (The box office during the holidays in 2020 was essentially zero, as cinemas were closed and the country went into lockdown.)
The status of the party as a moveable party also allows for a like-for-like comparison at this point. Artisan Gateway still has the year-to-date 2022 domestic aggregate at $1.73 billion, up from $1.07 billion on the same date in 2021.
