Outdoor Cinema in Bury St Edmunds and Colchester Summer 2022

An outdoor cinema will screen films in Bury St Edmunds and Colchester this summer.
Pop Up Pictures plans to screen 12 films, including The Greatest Showman, ET the Extra-Terrestrial and Disney’s new hit, Encanto, in Bury St Edmunds Abbey Gardens and Colchester Castle Park.
Danny Banthorpe, who helped organize the shows, said: “We’ve been screening films for seven years. We started when we saw a viral Facebook phishing event about an open-air cinema in Norwich – Thousands of people were interested, but there was no real event.
“We thought we’d give it a try, and we’re still here seven years later.”
Mr Banthorpe added: “Choosing the films is difficult – everyone has an opinion. So we do polls but they’re not very helpful as Dirty Dancing and The Greatest Showman always come out on top.
“This year it was even more difficult because few films were released.”
However, with 12 films to screen over three days, Pop Up Pictures is doing more than ever.
Mr Banthorpe said: “We went from three films in three nights to 12 films in three or four days.
“During the first lockdown, our production company bought an eight by six meter LED screen to make drive-in films. Before that, we used an inflatable screen, which only worked at night. In the summer, we only couldn’t really start movies until 9am, that meant we couldn’t really do stuff for the kids.”
Mr Banthorpe also confirmed that cinemas will allow visitors to bring their own food – but will be reduced if they do not.
He said: “It’s been the same price for seven years if you want to bring food, and £3 cheaper if you don’t.”
Pop Up Pictures will be in Colchester from July 21-24 and Bury St Edmunds from August 18-20. To learn more, visit facebook.com/PopUpPicturesCo.
