Korean cinemas offer discounts to vaccinated visitors
Multiplex operators in South Korea have started offering dramatically discounted movie tickets to moviegoers who have been vaccinated against the COVID-19 coronavirus. Prior to the 2019 pandemic, South Korea was the world’s fourth largest box office territory, but revenue and admissions this year are still at the lowest levels.
The move was announced Tuesday by the Korea Theater Association and is offered by the operators of the three biggest movie chains, CGV, Megabox and Lotte Cinema. The campaign will last one month, until the end of June.
Customers who can prove that they have received at least one shot of the vaccine will be offered a discount of KRW 6,000 ($ 5.40) on regular 2D movie screenings. This can cut the cost of a ticket by more than half in some places.
Lee Chang-moo, president of the Korea Theater Association, was quoted by local media as saying, “We have decided to launch this campaign in the hope of encouraging people to get vaccinated and resume their daily lives. normal as soon as possible.
Korea has controlled the virus better than many countries, but has failed to prevent the emergence of new clusters – nationwide, there have been more than 400 new cases per day in the past three days – and virus vaccination levels are currently low.
This has prompted a conservative response from the public, and movie theater attendance has not recovered from a peak in October. For much of the weekend of 2021, the box office languished between $ 3 million and $ 4 million, although it hit over $ 6 million in the past two weekends, powered by the arrival of “F9” at the top of the table.
“F9” has reached a cumulative $ 15.1 million since its release on May 19. This makes it the third highest grossing film this year in Korea. At this rate, it will soon overtake “Demon Slayer The Movie: Mugen Train” with a total of $ 17.9 million and “Soul”, currently $ 17.1 million.
The long-standing malaise has prompted several distributors to delay theatrical releases and divert some key titles directly to streaming platforms. And several cinemas have closed their doors.
