The Kerala government has authorized the reopening of cinemas and indoor auditoriums, following a sustained decrease in coronavirus cases in the state, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Saturday.
The relaxations will take effect from October 25, however, the reopening of cinemas and auditoriums will only be allowed with restrictions.
“Entrance will be restricted to those who are fully vaccinated, including employees. Theaters and auditoriums will operate with a 50% seating capacity,” Vijayan said.
The chief minister said more than 90% of the target population had received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine.
The government of Kerala previously announced new coronavirus-related guidelines, restricting movement of those who have not taken at least one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine.
Currently, the state allows on-site dining for hotels, restaurants and bars, but with a 50% seating capacity and staff must be fully vaccinated.
Earlier, the state government had also issued draft guidelines for the reopening of schools. The draft standards plan to allow only two students on a bench and to eliminate midday meals. Instead, a lunch allowance will be given to students.
Kerala recorded 13,217 new cases of Covid-19 and 121 deaths on Saturday, bringing the number of cases to 47,07,936 and the number of deaths to 25,303.
Health Minister Veena George said the state had tested 96,835 samples in the past 24 hours and that there were 745 departments in 368 self-governing local agencies where the population’s weekly infection rate was greater than 10%.
“There are 1,41,155 active cases in the state of which only 11% are in hospitals,” the minister said in a statement.
Among the districts, Ernakulam reported the highest number of fresh infections on Saturday – 1,730, followed by Thiruvananthapuram 1,584 and Thrissur 1,579.
Meanwhile, 14,437 people have recovered from the disease, bringing the total cured in the state to 45,40,866. “Of those found infected on Saturday, 51 reached the state from outside while 12,458 contracted the disease through contact.
The source of the infection of 623 people has not yet been located and 85 health workers are also among those infected, ”the statement said. There are 4,37,864 people under observation, 17,308 of whom are in isolation in various hospitals.
