Karl Urban, who plays the Kelvin version of the Dr. Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy timeline, gives an update on the long-awaited star trek 4. From 2009 star trek reboot, the new releases ushered the franchise into the era of modern cinema, though strong box office performances weren’t always accompanied by a warm reception from fans. The 2009 film was followed by two sequels: Star Trek Into Darkness in 2013 and Star Trek Beyond in 2016, the latter being the first not to be directed by JJ Abrams, as Justin Lin took the helm. All three episodes featured the same cast, including Urban as McCoy, Chris Pine as Kirk, and Zoe Saldaña as Lt. Uhura.
This is after the release of Star Trek Beyond that the movie side of the long-running franchise has been struggling with development, as the next movie hasn’t been clear for some time. There was a brief period where Quentin Tarantino would develop his own star trek movie, and Fargo Creator Noah Hawley was also attached to a project that could have ended up being the fourth installment in the rebooted timeline. SJ Clarkson was also there with a star trek 4 it would have brought back Chris Hemsworth as Kirk’s father. Eventually it lands in the hands of Wanda Vision director Matt Shakman, who is still set to direct the film. While negotiations are still ongoing, several main cast members have said they are excited to return, although this star trek 4 will be about remains a mystery.
Now, in an interview with UK radio station Radio-XUrban gave an exciting update on the progress of star trek 4. Urban explains that, even though he heard this was happening, he was “hear that for three years,” displaying uncertainty as to exactly when they might start production. What he is sure of is that they develop it and “they write a screenplay.“He also confirms that the cast are all keen to return and that, at this point, a start date is”just a matter of timing and logistics.” Read the full quote below:
“I have heard that [Star Trek 4] happening, but I’ve been hearing this for three years. [Laughs]. Look, all I know is they’re developing it, they’re writing a script, and I know 100% we all want to come back and do it, so I think it’s just a matter of timing and logistics at this stage. .. Where there is a will, there is a way, and there certainly is a will, so we would love to get back together and make one.”
Urban’s enthusiasm bodes well for fans of the franchise who are desperate to see the Enterprise team back on the big screen. Although there were some negative responses to the second installment, Star Trek Into Darkness2016 Star Trek Beyond was widely seen as a return to form. The biggest thing holding back anticipation for the fourth film is its lengthy development period. However, there might still be reason to get upset, as Urban’s on-screen captain Pine has said that star trek 4 should be more faithful to the source material, even if that means it costs less and earns less at the box office.
So it seems like there’s a great sense of camaraderie between the actors, similar to the one their characters share on screen. Urban’s enthusiasm, coupled with Pine’s point about the source material, is a sign that star trek 4 might end up becoming the most beloved of the rebooted movies. Before that, however, he has to start production. We can hope that star trek 4development issues are behind it all, and they manage to find the “will be” and “waywhich Urban says they’ll need to finish it in time for its scheduled December 2023 release date.
