Joker 2: 6 Quick Things We Know About The Joaquin Phoenix Movie
When 2019 is Joker came out, the world was thrown into a tailspin at the iconic representation as Joaquin Phoenix brought to the fascinating character of DC, painting a moving picture of many elements of society, such as the state of mental health, capitalism, poverty and much more. It captivated the public eye and did incredibly well at the box office, winning Phoenix the Academy Award for Best Actor. Really, it was a masterpiece.
So, of course, a sequel was in order, and now we know enough to talk about the next one. Joker film we are currently working on. However, who will star in this film with Phoenix and Lady Gaga? What could it be? If you have these questions and more, stay tuned and check out these six quick things we know about Joker 2.
The sequel will be called “Joker: Madness For Two”
Confirmed by DeadlineFollowing Joker will be titled Joker: Madness for Two. You might be wondering what this means for the Joker universe, and basically “madness a deux” is a French medical term, referring to a mental illness that affects two or more people.
What this means for the plot is unknown, as nothing has come out yet on what exactly the sequel will cover. The Joker end if Arthur Fleck lived in a mental asylum and would have committed murders (if it wasn’t all in his head) against nurses, but the title could mean we could see someone other than Fleck having the same mental issues serious – that we’ll get to later.
Joker: the release date of Folie À Deux is set for October 4, 2024
Don’t keep an eye on Joker: Madness for two on any Release calendar 2022 – or even in 2023, since this film should be released on October 4, 2024, according to the Deadline article of the previous one. While that seems far away, it makes sense, as the movie update wasn’t released until June 2022.
However, the Deadline article also confirmed that a December 2022 production start appears to be on track, so we might see some set photos before much longer.
Joaquin Phoenix is set to return as Arthur Fleck
It wouldn’t really be be a sequel to Joker if the man himself hadn’t returned, and luckily we don’t need to deal with anyone else taking on the famous villain’s mantle, as Joaquin Phoenix is confirmed to return as Arthur Fleck, according to Variety.
Phoenix ended up gaining critical acclaim for his portrayal of Fleck, earning him several awards including an Oscar, so it only makes sense that he would return. Phoenix has done a lot of work preparing for the role of Fleck, including losing a lot of weight to fit into the role, so who knows exactly what’s going to happen next for the star in this sequel. But, I’ll be happy to watch it anyway.
Another person who could come back for Joker: Madness for two is actress Zazie Beetzwho played Sophie Dumond in Joker. Variety reported that she was in talks to possibly return, but nothing has been confirmed yet, so take that with a grain of salt.
Lady Gaga will co-star with Phoenix
When the the news first circulated which Lady Gaga could jump on Joker: Madness for two as the co-star of Phoenix, I was eager to see who she would play, but now we at least have confirmation that Lady Gaga is will play in Joker: Madness for two alongside Phoenix, according to the Variety article from before.
To celebrate, Lady Gaga took to Twitter to share her excitement for the role, sharing a teaser with the rest of her followers to confirm her spot in the film:

Variety originally announced that Lady Gaga might be playing the role of Harley Quinn, a character who has appeared several times lately in the DC universe, and with her confirmation in the film, I can’t wait to see what she brings at the table. We had Margot Robbie playing Harley Quinn in DC’s live-action movies, and even heard Kaley Cuoco voice the iconic character from the HBO Max original series, but that would be a whole new take, separate from those two universes.
Lady Gaga has had a lot of mind-blowing roles as an actress, like her starring roles in the Created by Ryan Murphy american horror story series, so seeing her step into the shoes of a character like Harley Quinn is going to be exciting.
The Joker sequel will be a musical
I don’t think anyone saw this coming, but somehow I can see it working. Confirmed in Variety’s article from before, this upcoming sequel is set to be a musical.
I mean, if we’re going to talk about the best person to bring in for a musical, it would be Lady Gaga. The superstar has won multiple Grammy Awards for her impressive music career, sold millions of records and even won an Oscar for her song “Shallow” in the movie, A star is born, so she would be the best co-star to have in a movie like this.
And I can’t wait to see the musical moments between her and Phoenix. Now this is something I’m willing to pay to see – whether it’s in their head or not.
Todd Philips returns to the director’s chair
According to Deadline, it has been confirmed that the original director of Joker, Todd Philips returns to the director’s chair for Joker 2. At the beginning of June 2022, Philips took its instagram to share a teaser of the first page of the script for Joker: Madness for two, and it wasn’t that long after that it was confirmed he would be returning.
Philips was also nominated for Best Director for his role in the original Joker, so it’s great to see him return to the sequel and I can’t wait to see how he turns this into a musical. It will be something different, that’s for sure.
What excites you the most in terms of Joker: Madness for two? I’m sure whatever happens in theaters on October 4, 2024, we’re all going to be blown away, and I can’t wait to see The Joker and Harley Quinn back on screen in live-action form.
