Johnny Depp landed his first film role since the release of Minimata and Fantastic Beasts
Johnny Depp has found his next project and his first film role since the 2020s Minimal. Aamid the legal battle the actor is engaged in with his ex-wife Amber Heard, after she accused him of abusing her while they were together. Depp has been asked to quit his role as Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets after a UK court ruled against him in his libel suit against The Sun, which called him a “wife beater”. A defamation lawsuit against Heard is underway in the United States
His next project will take Pirates of the Caribbean actor in France, Variety reports that Johnny Depp is set to star as King Louis XV in a film by French director Maïwenn, who will star in the film as Jeanne du Barry, a countess who was Louis XV’s last mistress. No plot or title for the film has been released, but filming is expected to begin this summer.
Louis XV was nicknamed “Louis le Bien-Aimé” and reigned for 59 years – the longest in French history after Louis XIV. Despite his nickname, Louis XV died as an unpopular king amid accusations of corruption. Variety reports that filming will last approximately three months, and will take place primarily at the Palace of Versailles.
Minimal, in which Johnny Depp starred as an American photographer documenting the effects of mercury poisoning on the citizens of the Japanese city, was Depp’s last film role, and really his last major project, outside of the voice work he did for the anime series Puffin.
The actor, who was revealed as Gellert Grindelwald at the end of fantastic beasts and where to find them, played a big role in the sequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. However, shortly after filming began on Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets, Warner Bros. has asked Johnny Depp to step down from the role amid Amber Heard allegations.
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard tied the knot in 2015 after dating for a few years. Heard filed for divorce only a year later, in the spring of 2016, when she accused him of domestic violence and obtained a restraining order against him. The back and forth between the couple lasted for years and continues to this day. Discovery+ produces a two-part documentary, Johnny Vs. Amber, which will examine their battle on both sides, including Depp’s current lawsuit against Heard, who denies abuse allegations his ex-wife made in an op-ed for The Washington Post in 2018. That case is expected to go to trial this spring.
Amber Heard, for her part, will star in the highly anticipated Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is slated to hit theaters in December.
