‘Famous’ gets US release date with Kandoo Films – Deadline
EXCLUSIVE: Kandoo Films has acquired the worldwide rights to Popular, a drama by writer-director Michael Leoni that combines elements of live theater and cinema to highlight the impact of abuse in the entertainment industry. The independent distributor will post the photo in 10 U.S. theaters to begin Dec. 10 with digital platforms.
Chris Kattan, Brooke Butler, CJ Valleroy and Josh Pafchek direct the film’s ensemble cast, which centers on A-list celebrity Jason Mast (Pafchek), who driven by a devastating need to expose the truth pushes the boundaries of friendship to reveal the true cost of fame. What appears to be a night of celebration turns out to be a complex plan to confront its past in a story about Young Hollywood in the 1990s that confronts abuse and abuse of power in the industry.

“I have a deep love and respect for independent films when they’re done right,” said Howard Barish of Kandoo Films, who was Oscar nominated as producer of the Ava DuVernay documentary. 13th. “Popular is definitely one of those movies and it’s also so topical both in style and content. Leoni’s previous credits include American street kid on the epidemic of homelessness and youth and the drama of suicide among adolescents When today ends. He produced Popular with her 11:11 Experience partners Erica R. Katzin and Mchelle Kaufer, with Martine Melloul, Barish, Dawn Dunning and Inbal B. Lessner (Seduced: Inside Cult NXIVM) as executive producers.
Dunning, a former aspiring actress, was one of the women who testified against Harvey Weinstein during his sexual assault trial in New York City.
“I am honored to be part of the Popular team and help give this film the visibility it deserves, ”she said. “Speaking out against the abuse of power in the entertainment industry is something I firmly believe in. We don’t often talk about the abuse of young men, but it is time we did.”
