Demolition begins at the old Showcase Cinema in Derby
Demolition work at the old Showcase cinema in Derby appears to have started after workers moved to the site.
Video and photos taken Thursday, July 22, show men in high-visibility vests and an excavator ripping sections of the building.
It comes months after plans were submitted to demolish the building and a nearby Pizza Hut to make way for a car dealership.
The cinema itself closed permanently in September last year, with Showcase owners saying when the Covid pandemic is over, it will not reopen to the public.
The location holds fond memories for thousands of families in the city, the building, located in Foresters Leisure Park, being one of the first multiplex cinemas to be built in the UK.
Its permanent closure and suggestions that it could be demolished have shocked Derbyshire Live readers, with hundreds reaching out to us to express their sadness at the news.

In June, plans were submitted to level the building and replace it with a used car dealership from CarShop.
The plans, which also include the empty Pizza Hut next to the cinema, would see a new building constructed on the site of the old cinema.
