A lifeline has been thrown to keep the spotlight rolling in independent cinemas on the verge of “collapsing” under the impact of the pandemic, with a coastal cinema guaranteeing $ 60,000. Burnie’s Metro Cinema is expected to receive a financial boost as part of the federal government’s $ 20 million fund to support movie theater conservation and neighborhood improvements. Metro Cinemas Burnie chief executive John O’Neill said cinemas have been one of the businesses hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. IN OTHER NEWS “With Hollywood studios holding back blockbuster movies until theaters around the world reopen,” O’Neill said. “In April 2021, the federal government introduced a grant to help independent Australian cinemas, which saved many of them from collapse. Metro Burnie benefited from this grant, which was used for staff costs and to help modernize facilities. “I also want to thank the staff at Metro Theaters and our owner for supporting the business during these difficult times, and of course the great people at Burnie for supporting our business.” Braddon MHR Gavin Pearce said the grant would help the cinema recover from a significant drop in revenues. “Going to the movies is part of the social fabric of our region and it is important that support is provided as we come out of the economic impacts of the pandemic,” said Mr Pearce. “Unlike other types of businesses, theater operators don’t experience the same recovery due to circumstances beyond their control.” For example, as many other businesses affected by COVID have shifted to business models online, cinemas are limited in the way they can diversify their operations. He said any eligible cinema could apply for the financial aid, with the fund being open until December 2021, or until it runs out. The SCREEN fund is administered by Screen Australia and provides one-time grants of Business continuity of up to $ 85,000.

“With Hollywood studios holding back blockbuster movies until theaters around the world reopen,” Mr. O’Neill said.

“In April 2021, the federal government introduced a grant to help independent Australian cinemas, which saved many of them from collapse.

“Metro Burnie was a recipient of this grant, which was used for staff costs and to help modernize facilities.

“I also want to thank the staff at Metro Theaters and our owner for supporting the business during these difficult times, and of course the great people at Burnie for supporting our business.”

Braddon MHR Gavin Pearce said the grant would help the cinema recover from a significant drop in revenues.

“Unlike other types of businesses, theater operators do not experience the same recovery due to circumstances beyond their control.

“For example, while many other businesses affected by COVID have shifted to online business models, theaters are limited in how they can diversify their operations. “

He said any eligible cinema could apply for financial assistance, with the fund open until December 2021, or until it runs out.

The SCREEN Fund is administered by Screen Australia and provides one-time business continuity grants of up to $ 85,000.
