Bob Iger Says MCU and Star Wars Disney Plus Shows Can Hurt Movie Theaters
Former Disney CEO Bob Iger thinks MCU and star wars Disney Plus shows can hurt the movie industry.
With the rise of streaming over the past few years, major studios have created their own unique platforms, including Disney Plus, HBO Max, Peacock, and Paramount Plus, among others. Especially due to the ongoing events over the past two years, streaming has been a priority for the industry, as fears over the future of movie theaters in this tumultuous time remain a topic of discussion. As for former Disney CEO Bob Iger, he has his own thoughts on the impact that the new MCU and star wars home shows have on the movie theater sector.
Bob Iger spoke to The New York Times about the ever-evolving industry and expressed his belief that while the original shows on Disney Plus have brought great success to the company’s streaming service, it can have a negative impact. on the act of cinema in large numbers:
“I don’t think it’s death. I think it’s a serious injury that may not heal. And what I mean by that is not fatal. This could be fatal to some.
Bob Iger further explained that he thinks most moviegoers will seek out movies in theaters based on the spectacle versus smaller-scale movies who may prefer to watch at home:
“However, I think they’ll be much more particular about the movies they want to see away from home, where you’re likely, I think, to say or ask yourself, wait a minute, is this a movie that I need to see it on the big screen and do all of this, or can I wait or even not wait, for that matter, and see it at home?
While continuing, Bob Iger compared the movie-wide quality of the MCU’s Disney Plus original series and star wars, create increased competition for films on the big screen:
“It’s not even about watching a movie on the big screen or at home. It’s just that you have so many more choices around the house. Think about how many TV shows we’re talking about – at a pretty good, much better level of quality, from a production value standpoint, than it was before… Some of the TV shows that Disney has made – ‘Mandalorian’ being one, the Marvel series, ‘Falcon and the Winter Solider’, ‘Loki’ – all of them are a movie. So just cinemas have a lot more competition than they used to never before.
Bob Iger’s comments regarding the impact that the MCU and star wars The original series on Disney Plus on the theater business are quite enlightening to hear. On the one hand, given that it’s clear that The Walt Disney Company’s primary focus right now is expanding its streaming service, it’s no surprise that concerns for the movie industry remain a source of concern for some. However, thanks to the success of films like Spider-Man: No Coming Home, it seems audiences are still clamoring for a common experience for some big blockbusters.
The next MCU Disney Plus original series will be Moon Knight. Here is the synopsis:
“A new globe-trotting action-adventure series featuring a complex vigilante who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. The multiple identities within him find themselves thrown into a deadly war of the gods against a backdrop of Modern and ancient Egypt.
Moon Knight will be released on Disney Plus on March 30, 2022. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on Bob Iger, new MCU shows and star wars and the future of Disney Plus, and be sure to subscribe on our YouTube channel for more content!
